Sustaining Digital Resources: An On-the-Ground View of Projects Today: Ithaka Case Studies in Sustainability (Funders preface), Nancy L. Maron, K. Kirby Smith and Matthew Loy. Ithaka S+R. Produced and funded by JISC, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and
the National Science Foundation, November 2009.
"In July 2009, 'Sustaining Digital Resources' (Ithaka S+R and the JISC-led Strategic Content Alliance) was launched. The initial report investigated how, as institutional budgets tighten, will digital resources be able to continue to survive and thrive....However, this issue has many stakeholders, from the scholars and other content experts who devote time and energy to creating digital materials, to the host institutions, to the funding bodies themselves who finance the start-up phase. For the government agencies and private foundations that devote millions to the creation of new resources, the question is especially acute: funders want their investments to lead to long-term positive impacts, and digital resources require a level of ongoing care, development and enhancement that few funders can or want to support indefinitely. Therefore, Ithaka S+R and the Strategic Content Alliance, have re-written the original Executive Summary to give a more nuanced interpretation, as well as a succinct listing of 'key findings' and 'factors influencing sustainability', which are particularly pertinent to those working in funding bodies"
For more information, please see the Funders' Preface.

Technology Watch Report: File formats for preservation, by Malcolm Todd, The National Archives, DPC Technology Watch Series Report 09-02, October 2009.
From the Executive Summary: "File formats are the principal means of encoding information content in any computing environment. Preserving intellectual content requires a firm grasp of the file formats used to create, store and disseminate it, and ensuring that they remain fit for purpose. There are several significant pronouncements on preservation file formats in the literature. These have generally emanated from either preservation institutions or research projects and usually take one of three approaches:
- recommendations for submitting material to digital repositories
- recommendations or policies for long term preservation or
- proposals, plans for and technical documentation of existing registries to store attributes of formats.
"More recently, attention has broadened to pay specific attention to the significant properties of the intellectual objects that are the subject of preservation. This Technology Watch Report has been written to provide an overview of these developments in context by comparative review and analysis to assist repository managers and the preservation community more widely. It aims to provide a guide and critique to the current literature, and place it in the context of a wider professional knowledge and research base."
For more information, please see the report.

Internet, broadband, and cell phone statistics, Lee Rainie, Pew Internet & American Life Project, January 2010.
Overview: "In a national survey between November 30 and December 27, 2009, we find:
- 74% of American adults (ages 18 and older) use the internet a slight drop from our survey in April 2009, which did not include Spanish interviews. At that time we found that 79% of English-speaking adults use the internet.
- 60% of American adults use broadband connections at home a drop that is within the margin of error from 63% in April 2009.
- 55% of American adults connect to the internet wirelessly, either through a WiFi or WiMax connection via their laptops or through their handheld device like a smart phone. This figure did not change in a statistically significant way during 2009.
"These data come from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. The most recent survey was conducted from November 30 to December 27, 2009, using landline and cell phones and including interviews in Spanish. Some 2,258 adults were interviewed and the overall sample has a
margin of error of ± 2 percentage points."
