  • The Idea of Order: Transforming Research Collections for 21st Century Scholarship, introduction by Charles Henry, Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), ISBN 978-1-932326-35-2, June 10, 2010.

    "The Idea of Order explores the transition from an analog to a digital environment for knowledge access, preservation, and reconstitution, and the implications of this transition for managing research collections. The volume comprises three reports. The first, "Can a New Research Library be All-Digital?" by Lisa Spiro and Geneva Henry, explores the degree to which a new research library can eschew print. The second, "On the Cost of Keeping a Book," by Paul Courant and Matthew "Buzzy" Nielsen, argues that from the perspective of long-term storage, digital surrogates offer a considerable cost savings over print-based libraries. The final report, "Ghostlier Demarcations," examines how well large text databases being created by Google Books and other mass-digitization efforts meet the needs of scholars, and the larger implications of these projects for research, teaching, and publishing."

  • Keeping research data safe (Phase 2), Final report of the Keeping Research Data Safe 2 (KRDS2) project, by Neil Beagrie, et al., for the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), 2010.

    "The KRDS2 project has identified and analysed collections of long-lived research data and information on associated preservation costs and benefits and provided a larger body of material and evidence against which existing and future research data preservation cost modelling exercises can be tested and validated....this work will be critical to developing preservation costing tools and cost benefit analyses for justifying and sustaining major investments in repositories and data curation."

    "Some 895 experts responded to the invitation of the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center to predict the likely progress toward achieving the goals of the semantic web by the year 2020."

  • Greening Interlibrary Loan Practices, Dennis Massie, OCLC Research, May 2010.

    "In September 2009, OCLC Research commissioned a study of current Interlibrary Loan (ILL) practices by California Environmental Associates, a firm of environmental impact consultants. The study was completed in January 2010, with findings reviewed and amended in March 2010."

  • Towards inclusive knowledge societies: a review of UNESCO's action in implementing the WSIS outcomes, by David Souter, published in 2010 by the United Nations Educational, Scientic and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

    "This report reviews the UNESCO's work in these implementation areas during the five years since the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in 2005. It summarises some highlights of what has been achieved to date and reflects upon the challenges which have arisen in the implementation of WSIS outcomes."

  • JISC Project Report: Digitisation Programme: Preservation Study April 2009, completed by the Digital Preservation Coalition, the Digital Archives Department of the University of London Computer Centre (ULCC), and Portico.

    "In 2009, DPC with University of London Computer Centre and Portico carried out an extensive analysis for the JISC Digitisation Programme, examining the projects funded through this programme and assessing their plans for access beyond the existence of their project grants. This is a scaled down version of the report with analysis, and a number of case studies have also been produced."

  • Review of the State of the Art of the Digital Curation of Research Data, Project Report, by Alex Ball, Bath: University of Bath, (ERIM Project Document erim1rep091103ab11), 4 May 2010.

    From the Introduction: "The aim of this report is to present the state of the art of the digital curation of research data, in terms of both theoretical understanding and practical application, and note points of particular interest to the ERIM Project. The report begins by reviewing the concepts of data curation and digital curation, and then exploring the terminologies currently in use for describing digital repositories and data lifecycles."

  • Seeing Standards: A Visualization of the Metadata Universe, by Jenn Riley, Indiana University Libraries, 2010.

    "The sheer number of metadata standards in the cultural heritage sector is overwhelming, and their inter-relationships further complicate the situation. This visual map of the metadata landscape is intended to assist planners with the selection and implementation of metadata standards. Each of the 105 standards listed here is evaluated on its strength of application to defined categories in each of four axes: community, domain, function, and purpose. The strength of a standard in a given category is determined by a mixture of its adoption in that category, its design intent, and its overall appropriateness for use in that category."

  • Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Scholarly Research in Communication, Center for Social Media's Future of Public Media, June 2010.

    "This document is a code of best practices that helps U.S. communication scholars to interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use. Fair use is the right to use copyrighted material without permission or payment under some circumstances – especially when the cultural or social benefits of the use are predominant. It is a general right that applies even in situations where the law provides no specific authorization for the use in question. This guide identifies four situations that represent the current consensus within the community of communication scholars about acceptable practices for the fair use of copyrighted materials."

  • A Slice of Research Life: Information Support for Research in the United States, by Susan Kroll and Rick Forsman, a publication of OCLC Research in support of the RLG Partnership, June 2010.

    From the Introduction to the report: "In the spring of 2009, OCLC Research and the Research Information Network (RIN) initiated parallel investigations into current use of tools and services that support of all stages of the research life cycle in institutions of higher education in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The goal of these joint projects was to discover researchers' needs and desires in a variety of disciplines as they perform the complex tasks of creating new knowledge....This report summarizes the information gained through interviews held with researchers, research assistants, graduate students, grant and other research administration specialists, and university administrators."

  • DPC Case Notes: Welsh Journals Online: Effective Leadership for a Common Goal, Digital Preservation Coalition.

    "This case note examines a complex digitisation project at the National Library of Wales from the perspective of the organisation. There are many parties with an interest in digital preservation and many different skills are required. This creates a risk which can be managed where an organisation is clear about where responsibility lies for preservation actions."

  • Europeana Public Domain Charter, Europeana, May 2010.

    "This Charter is a policy statement, not a contract. It does not bind Europeana's content providers to any position. The Europeana Foundation is issuing the Charter in order to influence the debate among the Europe's memory organisations, policy makers and funders about the terms under which Public Domain digital content is made available."

  • NISO Institutional Identifier (I2) Midterm Work to Date: Request for Comments, June 2010 (comments due by 2 August 2010).

    "In 2008, the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) established the Institutional Identifier (I2) Working Group to develop a robust, scalable, and interoperable standard to uniquely identify institutions and to describe relationships between entities within them....The purpose of the Midterm Request for Comments is to provide the Working Group with valuable guidance to complete development of the I2 standard and to undertake midterm course correction, as needed."

  • Knowledge = Information in Context: on the Importance of Semantic Contextualisation in Europeana, by Prof. Stefan Gradmann, Berlin School of Library and Information Science / Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Europeana White Paper Number 1, April 2010.

    "Europeana's first White Paper looks at the key role linked data will play in Europeana's development and in helping Europe's citizens make connections between existing knowledge to achieve new cultural and scientific developments. Without linked data, Europeana could be seen as a simple collection of digital objects. With linked data, the potential is far greater."

  • 25th Annual ACM Symposium on Applied Computing: Track on Information Retrieval, 21 - 25 March 2011, TaiChung, Taiwan. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 24 August 2010.

    "Information Retrieval (IR) can be considered as the first historical research area aimed at defining systems for the automatic access to huge amounts of information. The research on information access and retrieval aims at modelling, implementing and evaluating systems that provide a fast and effective content- based access to a large amount of multimedia information. One main issue of such systems is to estimate the relevance of documents to user information needs. This is a very hard and complex task due to several reasons which a large volume of research has attempted to analyse and tackle. IR has grown well beyond its primary goals of indexing and searching textual documents. With the expansion of the Internet and of the Web, other access techniques have emerged, such as Recommender Systems and Information Filtering systems, Question Answering Systems, Meta-search engines, Geomap information services, and Web 2 collaborative retrieval services."

    "Ontology matching is a key interoperability enabler for the Semantic Web, as well as a useful tactic in some classical data integration tasks. It takes the ontologies as input and determines as output an alignment, that is, a set of correspondences between the semantically related entities of those ontologies. These correspondences can be used for various tasks, such as ontology merging and data translation. Thus, matching ontologies enables the knowledge and data expressed in the matched ontologies to interoperate."
