    Abstract: "This report describes the current approaches of 11 art museums in the United States and the United Kingdom to the use of images of works of art that are in their collections and are in the public domain. Each approach is slightly different. By presenting the thought processes and methods used in these institutions, this report aims to inform the decision making of other museums that are considering open access to images in their collections."

    "[This publication] presents the Committee on the Analysis of Massive Data's work to make sense of the current state of data analysis for mining of massive sets of data, to identify gaps in the current practice and to develop methods to fill these gaps. The committee thus examines the frontiers of research that is enabling the analysis of massive data which includes data representation and methods for including humans in the data-analysis loop. The report includes the committee's recommendations, details concerning types of data that build into massive data, and information on the seven computational giants of massive data analysis." The publication can be read online free of charge, or copies may be purchased in print format.

In addition to the findings reported here, this project will provide a national dataset that can be analyzed by discipline, institution type, and other demographic characteristics, compared with findings from a parallel US- based project, and tracked for changes over time."

    From the Introduction: "The intended audience [for this report] is those who are just starting to manage born-digital materials, from those wondering where to begin, to those who are actively planning their archival workflow. This paper will take the reader to the point where the digital content has been successfully transferred and preliminary processing of the files has begun. It ends with sample workflows to help readers conceptualize the process, resources that may provide additional avenues of learning and research, and ways to become engaged in the digital archives community."

  • Younger Americans' Library Habits and Expectations, by Kathryn Zickuhr, Lee Rainie and Kristen Purcell, Pew Internet & American Life Project, June 2013.

    From the Summary of Findings: "Younger Americans – those ages 16-29 – exhibit a fascinating mix of habits and preferences when it comes to reading, libraries, and technology. Almost all Americans under age 30 are online, and they are more likely than older patrons to use libraries' computer and internet connections; however, they are also still closely bound to print, as three-quarters (75%) of younger Americans say they have read at least one book in print in the past year, compared with 64% of adults ages 30 and older."

    "The video of the webcast "LibValue: Comprehensive Approaches to Defining Library Value" presented on May 9, 2013, is now available on ARL's YouTube channel. This webcast provides an overview of methods used to estimate value in academic libraries and describes a study that calculated return on investment at the Syracuse University Library in 2010 - 2011. The presenter is Bruce Kingma, professor in the School of Information Sciences and Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. Webcast slides (PDF) are also available for download."
