Readers from the business community, particularly those that directly serve libraries, may find the report helpful for defining research and development efforts. "The report considers the specificities of the market for current journal issues. In doing so, it discusses the broad facts about the market; it undertakes a quantitative analysis of journal prices; it discusses the implications of technological innovation on pricing strategies and the dynamics of entry; and it analyzes the implication of these developments in terms of competition policy.
"It also discusses the various alternatives for disseminating and accessing scientific publications. This includes the question of access to research results on individual web pages or in public repositories, the development of openaccess journals as well as other alternatives, such as pay-per-view, the question of the long-term preservation of electronic publications and the use of standards to ensure interoperability between systems. "

Report on Orphan Works: A Report of the Register of Copyrights, United States Copyright Office, January 2006.
"The Copyright Office has completed its study of problems related to "orphan works" – copyrighted works whose owners may be impossible to identify and locate. As requested by Senator Orrin Hatch and Senator Patrick Leahy, the Office submitted its Report on Orphan Works to the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 31, 2006."

"The purpose of our research was to map the universe of digital resources available to undergraduate educators in a subset of users in the humanities and social sciences (H/SS), and to examine how understanding use and users can benefit the integration of these resources into undergraduate teaching."

"To secure the long-term future of these born-digital and digitised assets, significant effort must be put into ensuring that they are preserved and continue to be accessible in the future. Over the past few years, the JISC has funded a series of feasibility studies which aim to assess the preservation risk and retention criteria for digital content, and to help inform and prioritise the development of future services and calls in digital preservation. The Digital Images Archiving study forms part of the feasibility study programme and has been funded to scope the preservation requirements of digital image files and to determine archiving methodologies and future research directions....The study is now complete and a copy of the draft final report is available for public consultation at <http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=imagesarchiving>. Comments and feedback are invited till 31 May 2006, which will be considered and incorporated into the final report."

"Providing flexible efficient access to relevant information remains a challenge. Approaches based on attention metadata present novel opportunities to deal with this challenge. Attention metadata indicate what end users do with specific information objects. End user applications (authoring tools, search tools, repositories, email applications, blogs and wikis) can generate attention metadata. Collecting, managing, merging, analyzing and exchanging these distributed metadata enables smart tools to exploit data about user experiences with heterogeneous tools for more flexible user information interaction, while respecting user privacy. For instance, users of one application can be recommended relevant material, based on their attention given to information that they have interacted with in other applications. This workshop intends to bring together researchers from the relevant fields, so as to discuss recent advances and identify future challenges."
