  • New Roles for New Times: Digital Curation for Preservation, by Tyler Walters and Katherine Skinner, published by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), March 2011.

"This report looks at how libraries are developing new roles and services in the arena of digital curation for preservation. The authors consider a 'promising set of new roles that libraries are currently carving out in the digital arena,' describing emerging strategies for libraries and librarians and highlighting collaborative approaches through a series of case studies of key programs and projects. They also provide helpful definitions and offer recommendations for libraries considering how best to make or expand their investments in digital curation. Issues and developments within and across the sciences and humanities are considered."

  • Managing and Sharing Data: best practice for researchers, by Veerle Van den Eynden, Louise Corti, Matthew Woollard, Libby Bishop and Laurence Horton, published by the UK Data Archive, University of Essex, May 2011.

"To support researchers in producing high quality research data for long-term use and in meeting ESRC's more stringent Research Data Policy requirements, the UK Data Archive has revised and expanded its popular and highly cited Managing and Sharing Data: best practice for researchers, first published in 2009."

  • Managing University Intellectual Property in the Public Interest, Stephen A. Merrill and Anne-Marie Mazza, Editors, National Academy Press, 2010, ISBN-10: 0-309-16111-8.

"Thirty years ago federal policy underwent a major change through the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, which fostered greater uniformity in the way research agencies treat inventions arising from the work they sponsor....As a result of the Act's passage, patenting and licensing activity from such research has accelerated. Although the system created by the Act has remained stable, it has generated debate about whether it might impede other forms of knowledge transfer. Concerns have also arisen that universities might prioritize commercialization at the expense of their traditional mission to pursue fundamental knowledge – for example, by steering research away from curiosity-driven topics toward applications that could yield financial returns. To address these concerns, the National Research Council convened a committee of experts from universities, industry, foundations, and similar organizations, as well as scholars of the subject, to review experience and evidence of the technology transfer system's effects and to recommend improvements. The present volume summarizes the committee's principal findings and recommendations."

  • The role of microfilm in digital preservation, by Heather Brown, John Baker, Walter Cybulski, Andy Fenton, John Glover, Paul Negus, Jonas Palm of the International Microfilm Collaboration working group.

"The DCC's Digital Curation Reference Manual is designed to help data custodians, producers and users better understand the challenges they face and the roles that they play in creating, managing and preserving digital information over time....Drawing on a risk management perspective, this installment introduces the complementary role that microfilm, and particularly computer output microfilm (COM), can play within the broad spectrum of digital preservation. It provides some international examples of current and best practice and highlights some technical issues relating to standards."
