Best Practices Guides to Creating Digital Resources, David Brown Book Company
Creating Digital Performance Resources: A Guide to Good Practice, edited by Barry Smith.
"'Performing arts' covers a vast range of interests and skills, involving as it does designers, directors, actors and performers, musicians, critics, technicians, analysts, administrators, theorists. A central tenet of this Guide is to encourage professionals in the performing arts to consider some of the advantages that digital resources may now offer. It is noticeably different from its predecessors in the series. Not so much a manual of 'how to do it', it is primarily intended to encourage you to use the available technology in the first place. All the contributors have directed successful projects involving various aspects of digital resources related to the performing arts. In some instances it was for documentation purposes, in some for teaching purposes, in some for research purposes, in some for all three. The guide includes a comprehensive glossary of terminology."
Creating Digital Audio Resources: A Guide to Good Practice, by Nick Fells, Pauline Donachy and Catherine Owen.
"A basic 'how to' for those using audio materials in the creation of digital resources. The guide addresses issues of copyright, the choice of appropriate equipment, presenting and delivering audio material, data management and methodological procedure."
Creating Digital Resources for the Visual Arts: Standards and Good Practice, by Catherine Grout, Phil Purdy and Janine Rymer.
"This guide provides advice on legal issues such as Copyright and Rights Management when creating and using digital picture resources, technical advice on software and producing good quality images, standards for data documentation, project management, storage and preservation, and innovative creative techniques, including web design and virtual reality."

Exploring Charging Models for Digital Cultural Heritage
"The purpose of this study (on behalf of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) is to investigate some of the underlying assumptions being made in the move from previously analog photographic services into the realm of digital capture and delivery, in particular to look at how marketable, cost efficient and income-stable the new digital services and resources are in comparison with previous methods (which in many places still exist alongside the newer digital developments)."
"The study, through interviews and comparative modelling of costs and fees charged, illuminated the differences in practice for the sale of analog versus digital formats. The report includes information upon:

Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography
"This bibliography presents selected English-language articles, books, and other printed and electronic sources that are useful in understanding scholarly electronic publishing efforts on the Internet. Most sources have been published between 1990 and the present; however, a limited number of key sources published prior to 1990 are also included. Where possible, links are provided to sources that are freely available on the Internet."
"An article about the development and utilization of the bibliography has been published in The Journal of Electronic Publishing."

Library Preservation and Conservation Tutorial
"Despite the best efforts of librarians and archivists to address problems of preservation at the local level, information on viable and practical preservation program development is not easy to find, and much that is available seems directed more towards affluent institutions. In many countries, it is difficult to find the model preservation programs on which librarians and archivists can build, and the necessary equipment and supplies are often hard to trace."
"CLIR and Cornell University will launch the first in a series of Web-based tutorials on preservation. John Dean and Anne Kenney of Cornell designed the initial tutorial for us in Southeast Asia, with the particular needs and challenges of that region in mind."
"The tutorial has four main parts: Preservation Management and Planning, Preservation, Building Capacity and Supporting the Effort. The narrative is illustrated by line drawings rather than photographs to avoid download delays. Much of the narrative presents new information on particular relevance to librarians and preservationists in tropical climates (e.g., passive climate control to avoid the need for air-conditioning and integrated pest management to avoid the need for chemical pesticides.) The tutorial also includes a glossary and information on how to contact local vendors."
"The Henry Luce Foundation provided funding for the tutorial, which will be available at <http://www.librarypreservation.org/>."

AMIA 2002 Symposium - Biomedical Informatics: One Discipline, 9 - 13 November 2002, San Antonio, Texas, USA.
"Areas of interest within biomedical informatics are so diverse that one questions whether a single disciplineor its annual conferencecan embrace the entirety of the field. Self-described informaticians are, and will continue to be, involved in endeavors as varied as medical records implementation, genomics, clinical decision support, image compression, and legal aspects of medical privacy. Nonetheless, a shared mandate argues powerfully for an inclusive discipline. All these subdisciplines have as their goal the furthering of health care through the creation and use of biomedical knowledge."
"With an inclusive discipline and a comprehensive conference, there are key opportunities for those involved in specialized areas of informatics and health information technology to identify high-yield synergies, share tools and techniques, and confront challenges together. In this spirit, AMIA 2002 has been organized into the four major tracks described below. Attendees will be able to sample for themselves the full richness and breadth of the discipline of biomedical informatics and also avail themselves of in-depth, state-of-the-art insights afforded by the track-themed sessions."

ASSIST 2002: Information Connections and Community, 18 - 21 November 2002, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
"The first years of the new millennium and recent world events have cast into bold relief the role played by information in a complex global society. We are seeing a new awareness of the importance of the free flow of necessary and time-sensitive information and the technologies that support it. Information organization, access and transfer are more than ever recognized as essential elements in all aspects of business and daily interaction. That information plays a profound role in building and sustaining community on a local and global scale has been vividly demonstrated by the reactions of individuals and institutions when faced with a major disaster. The ability of our institutions to react to cataclysmic events has been shown to be dependent on an information infrastructure that is stable, secure and adaptable, highlighting the roles of disaster preparedness and preservation. The information technologies which we have begun to take for granted have, when challenged, been dynamically adapted to new situations."
"The 2002 ASIST conference will provide an opportunity to explore these and other information phenomena and their contribution to the transformation of our society."

CCS 2002: 9th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security, 18 - 22 November 2002, Washington, DC, USA.
"Papers offering novel research contributions in any aspect of computer security [were] solicited for submission to the Ninth ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security. The primary conference focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case studies, and implementation experiences. Papers [will] have practical relevance to the construction, evaluation, application, [and] operation of secure systems. Theoretical papers [will] make convincing argument for the practical significance of the results. Theory [will] be justified by compelling examples illustrating its application. The primary criterion for [paper] appropriateness for CCS [has been] demonstrated practical relevance. CCS has, therefore, rejected perfectly good papers that are appropriate for theory-oriented conferences."

Archiving - whose problem is it?, ALPSP 9th Publishing and the Internet Seminar, 29 November 2002, London, United Kingdom.
"Archiving and related issues of digital preservation are becoming ever more significant within the scientific and scholarly communication chain. There are challenges for us all - publishers, authors, librarians, national libraries, intermediaries and aggregators - in maintaining access to digital resources over time. This seminar will explore the issues for the community, through the viewpoints of the different elements of the scholarly/information chain."
"The ephemeral nature of web publication, allied to its dissemination possibilities, has added complexity to the archival function where little existed in print. Publications can get lost when technology changes, when the publisher changes or indeed when commercial imperatives dictate - and then whose job is it to preserve some reliable source data? - and in what format should that data be preserved? - are we, or our successors, to be interested in the actual content or in its 'form'? - and how will this all be paid for?...By its very nature the subject 'archiving' has become broad with multiple meanings and aspects. The seminar will focus on issues specific to long term archival preservation. While technical issues are rarely far from the surface, the seminar will concentrate on implementation, policy, licensing and business models."
"Who should attend? Society and commercial publishers, and all those in related industries/activities, with an interest in the strategic and financial issues of content preservation."
